Sunnyside Middle School serves 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students at both Harrison Middle School and Sierra Vista Middle School. Students participate in enrichment activities consisting of Arts and Crafts, Technology, Community Service projects, Nutrition and Physical Education, and Outdoor Adventure. During the 2014/2015 school year, youth were able to experience “Latino Legislative Day,” “We Day,” and two challenges “Android App Challenge,” and “The Zillah Bobot Challenge.”
The Android App Challenge allowed students to be exposed to computer programming and the development of an Android App that would make a difference in our community. Student competed with other youth from around the state of Washington. Upon entering the challenge students did not have any experience with computer programming and after completion of the program students walked away with leadership skills, life long skills for employment, computer programming experience, communication skills, and experience collaborating on a team. Students were successful in the challenge with 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place and were rewarded with Kindle Fire HD tablets.
It is the goal of the 21st Century program to build future leaders for tomorrow by equipping youth in reading and math through project based learning and STEM. Students gain powerful skills as life long learners.
